Vomits and poos and fingers up the bum

I'll be the first to admit that I've been a bit remiss at blogging, but let me assure you that it has been for some very good reasons.

Firstly, both boys have had two(!) bouts of gastro/stomach flu each(!) over the last couple of weeks. This of course has been occupying a lot of my time with all the extra cuddling of sick little guys, mopping up vomits, changing whole outfits after explosive diarrheas, and doing many many loads of pooey, vomity washing. Thankfully, I think that fun is behind us now.

Secondly, I've been a bit extra sleep-deprived of late. Ollie hasn't ever quite worked out what sleeping through the night means, and Elliot has decided that he absolutely positively cannot sleep all alone all night long. This inevitably means that one of us ends up in Elliot's three-quarter length toddler bed for at least part of the night (because we absolutely refuse to start with the whole sleeping in mommy and daddy's bed) while the other one of us gets up to feed Oliver once (and sometimes twice!!) each night.

We're also knee deep in a third (and final?!?!) attempt at potty training, and I'm super psyched to report that we're over two weeks in and doing really well. Wait what am I saying 'we' for? Elliot is the one who's doing awesome!! Sure, he still has an accident now and then, but he's doing a really great job of doing the vast majority of his wees on the toilet/potty. And what's really impressive is that even when we're out doing really fun things, Elliot has still been doing an excellent job of letting me know when he needs to make a dash to the loo for a wee.

Wowzer, have a look at all those stickers!
Unfortunately, the pooing has been a little bit more problematic. Partially this is due to the aforementioned tummy bugs. It's a bit hard to hold it when it's not exactly a patient sort of poo. But even during the periods of  more regular bowel movements, Elliot's been struggling, and I'm not exactly sure why. It seems to me that he's having a really difficult time letting it go, and he ends up getting all constipated (that or sticking his fingers up his bum and getting them all pooey, presumably to stop the poo from coming out? Elliot will hate me one day for sharing that little tidbit).

So if anyone has any advice on this lovely topic (or on how to get a 2 and a 1/2 year old or 6 month-old to sleep on their own all night), I'd love to hear it. In the meantime, we'll keep on encouraging all the successes and making light of accidents and doing our darndest to make it as unstressful as we can.

And I'll try to catch up on the blogging.

Elliot 2.5

Wowzer, what an amazing time of ups and downs! One minute I'm beaming with joy and pride at all the amazing accomplishments, wondrous words, shows of manners and acts of kindness that Elliot surprises me with on a nearly daily basis, and the next I'm ready to wring his little neck.

One thing for sure is the our not-so-little Elliot never ceases to amaze us. At two and a half, Elliot's extra-large personality continues to shine. I'm so proud of his bravery, zest for life, independence, and self-confidence, and I so hope that life never sucks any of it from him.

But with this strong personality also comes, some fierce "my-do-it-ness", willfulness, and quite a lot of dramatics and emotional outbursts. And honestly, these things sometimes get just a wee bit tiresome (maybe even more so because he takes after his mom in these departments and it drives me crazy!)

Elliot's energy and fearlessness make it really easy on us sometimes too. We've been awfully busy lately, and Elliot just rolls with it. We've had another crazy work spurt on the house (putting in grass and the grey water system and finishing the interior of the guest room, play room and second bath) and Elliot just loves helping out whenever he can! In fact, spending time with Daddy digging in the yard or watering the garden or sweeping the front porch are all favourite things. In fact, doing anything outside that requires getting extra dirty is pretty awesome to Elliot.

We've also been busy this month going to some pretty cool concerts. We went to see Play School live (Play School is an Australian TV show where they sing songs and play pretend and make crafty things) with Aine and also to a kid's concert put on by the Western Australia Symphony Orchestra. As always, without any self-consciousness, Elliot jumps on up and follows along with all the songs and dance moves grinning shamelessly the whole time. I could just eat him up sometimes!!
Now that the weather has been getting better, Elliot's been having a great time on our new grass riding his skuut and blowing bubbles until he gets light-headed. And when the weather isn't better, he's pretty happy playing endless games of hide-and-seek (where Elliot always gets too excited to remain hid and ends up jumping out saying "here I am") spending time in our new playroom bouncing on our little bouncy castle (that I found for $15!!!) and wrestling with me or his dad or Blake or Nacho or even Oliver if nobody else is obliging.

He's also discovered his artistic side and loves spending time painting on his new easel and doing cuttings (playing with scissors and cutting any piece of paper he can find into a thousand little pieces) and gluing together little foam creatures and drawing and tracing and colouring and pasting and molding and creating and putting together puzzles . . . . I just love that he's happy to spend some quiet time concentrating on these new hobbies and isn't completely transfixed on watching DVDs and playing on my iPhone 24/7 like he was a few months ago.

Elliot continues to love daycare and swimming lessons and Tumble Tots which we've taken up this term. He's a bit of a teacher's pet and loves to show off whether it be shouting out answers or proudly demonstrating his ability to follow instructions. He's also super keen to help out every chance he gets. If only he were so helpful, putting away toys or following directions at home!! That said, we've started him doing a couple of chores: feeding Nacho and putting his dirty clothes in the basket, which he quite enthusiastically completes nearly all the time.

And here's a little story to sum up our spirited little go-getter: At the Broome markets a few weeks ago, Elliot was playing with a stick he found. The next thing I know, a four or five-year-old boy had the stick and Elliot was charging at the boy intent on getting the stick back. Both boys were rolling and wrestling on the ground by the time I was able run over to break it up. Elliot was crying, clearly stunned at the way things had ended up but showed no signs of letting up. In the end, the boy gave up the stick and ran off.

Later on at the markets, Elliot was off exploring with Paul and the lure of a life of crime seems to have got the better of him. Without Paul nor the vendor (who apparently has quite the reputation of catching kids with sticky fingers) noticing, Elliot had pocketed a little frog-shaped clay flute.

And then, that night we were all at a pub for dinner when Elliot followed Paul to the bar to order some drinks. Elliot climbed up on a bar stool and when he wasn't getting the attention he wanted shouted out, "Lady, get me my drink!" Apparently it was quite a hit with the other guys at the bar.

You can't help but loving our little monkey, half-terror half-angel and always bigger than life. I'm an eensy bit nervous that we're going to have our hands full with this boy . . . I mean, even more than we already do, but it surely will be a fun ride.

Aussie Father's Day

Father's Day in Australia was last Sunday and we had a super fun day, well weekend actually.

Saturday morning we all went to Elliot's swimming lessons which is always fun. Afterward we went up to one of my favourite places, the Melville Rose Garden for a yummy brunch. And of course, we had to feed the fishes which we all love. These fish are insane!!

Sunday, Paul got to sleep in and was served vegemite [blech] and cheese crumpets in bed. The boys gave him lots of extra cuddles and a cute mug with their handprints.

Mother of the Year

Somebody really ought to nominate me for mother of the year . . . just watch!

The boys playing LIVE!

We've been getting the video camera out lots more lately and video taping the boys having fun together, tickling each other, giving each other raspberries. Plus there's lots of Elliot singing songs, doing dances and acting like a baby (one of his new fun things to do!).

So if you're bored at work or just can't sleep you can check out here or here or here or here. And if you just can't get enough you can also click here or here or even here.

Enjoy!

Mr Smarty Pants

Oi vay! Elliot has worked out how to open the safety latches that we so cleverly put on all the cupboards and drawers that we didn't want him getting into. So what do we do now that our toddler outsmarted the toddler-proof latches?

Is there no end to the work of the laundry hag?

Ever since Elliot was born, I've cheekily called myself the laundry hag since my days seem to be filled with sorting laundry, treating stains, hanging clothes on the line and folding and putting away endless piles of washing. Pretty much every day I have to do a load of laundry or it starts to get on top of me and things get ugly.

And this is what the laundry looked like after a mere five day holiday. Five loads later I was finally done with the vacation washing and then got to try to catch up with the dirty clothes that had accumulated while I was doing all the holiday laundry.

The laundry hag will never be out of work!

Move over Moondoggie

Mommy and Daddy and Oliver and I got on an airplane and went up up up into the sky and then down down down to Auntie Susan and Uncle Richard's house in Broome. I had soooooo much fun playing with my cousins, Dominic and Vincent. Here are some of the highlights:

Eating frozen mangoes with Mommy

Playing in the big big waves with Daddy. I kept asking for more more more BIG waves!!!!

Eating lots and lots of pizza with the whole family

Going to the water playground with Vincent and Dominic

And best of all, going to the croc park, crikey!! ~ Elliot
