After a good night's sleep, we gobbled down our lovely hotel breakfast (can you tell we were a little in love with this hotel?), picked up our rental car, and made our way to the caves of Loltun a couple of hours south of Merida.
We had a private guide and got all sorts of insight on how the Mayans used these caves for ceremonial purposes as well as hiding spots when the Spanish invaded. There were carvings and cave paintings, and Ollie even discovered some fragments of what was indisputably an ancient Mayan artifact.
It was a great day, full of adventure and just a wee taster of the fun that was in store for us during our next two weeks in Mexico.
