One would assume that a bus ride where you and your family were the only four passengers on board would be pretty bearable. Not so much when we had to disembark the bus on both sides of the Mexico/Belize border for immigration and customs paperwork at midnight and then another stop an hour further along the way so that we could pay for the Mexican portion of the trip. Mix those stops with an incredibly cold bus (even by Mexican bus standards) and an extremely dodgy stretch of one-lane highway for most of the early morning and you get a very tired family arriving in Merida at 6 in the morning who had to pass nearly two and a half hours in a mediocre 24-hour restaurant until we could check-in to our hotel. Naps were definitely on the cards.
