Canoeing through the mouth of hell

One of the things we were most looking forward to when we traveled inland to the Cayo District, was our Barton Creek Cave canoeing expedition. Our guide explained that to the Mayans, caves were the entrance to the underworld where rituals and sacrifices were performed in order to appease the gods. Inside we saw evidence of these rituals including a human skull.

The trip was made all the more adventurous by the rough and rugged car journey to get to the cave including fjording a river in our jeep. We totally felt like Indiana Jones.
