Litchfield National Park

We'd heard so many amazing things about this little National Park just south of Darwin that all of us were thrilled to spend a couple of days at Litchfield.

Our first stop on the way into the park was to have a look at the amazing Magnetic Termite Mounds. Unlike the larger, traditional termite mounds, these mounds have been built by clever termites who have accounted for the harsh temperatures of northern Australia. Each mound is aligned on a north/south axis with wide eastern and western faces to ensure that one half of the mound is in the shade for most of the day. Pretty clever. There were also a couple of monstrous non-magnetic mounds.

After heating up checking out all those termite mounds, it was high time for a picnic and swim at the gorgeous Wangi Falls. Both boys made good and sure that we were 100% positive that there were no crocodiles before getting in to the water, and Ollie refused to venture any deeper than about waist deep as he wanted to be sure that he could see the bottom. Elliot was a bit braver, and he and I swam across to the falls where we found a cool natural hot tub in the rocks about a third the way up the rocks on the smaller falls.

After such a long swim at Wangi, we only had time to check out Florence Falls from the lookout . . .

. . . and then we headed for an afternoon splash at Ollie's favourite , the Buley Rockholes. Where we jumped off rocks and sat in smaller (but still quite powerful falls). Such an awesome day in an incredibly beautiful part of the world.
